These measurements repeated in many Purānas indicate a value of the yojana to be approx 1.5 miles. This identifies Bhārata with the continent of Eurasia.

Prabhu I am a follower of your Blogs. It is very important what you say in this article, because you say that a jewel would be equivalent to 1.5 miles. In the Bhagavatam it says that a Joyana equals 8 miles. but what you say now for me is very important because I did not understand how Jambuduipa could have 1000 jewels or 800 thousand miles, and the continents around it had no logic. but with this new measure everything can match better. Thanks prabhu.
The problem with the yojana is real. Throughout the Bhagavatam the editors have automatically inserted ‘8 miles per yojana’ in the translations. However, This is only a recent European standard. During the time of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, the yojana was 5 miles. Besides this, after studying two dozen slokas from 18 Puranas that refer to the distance between tirthas in India in ‘yojanas’, that can be measured today in ‘miles’, we find a complete range from 1.5 miles to 8.5 miles.
In my new book a total of seven reasons why the yojana may have changed since the composition of the Bhagavata Purana. The most logical is the fact that Bharata-varsa is the only varsa where the length of the yojana reduces during the cycle of four yugas, because the yojana is relative to man’s height and relative to the size of the cow, which both reduce during the Mahayuga.
Prabhu reverences. Thanks for your explanations. I had heard that a group of studious Prabhupada disciples had studied Yojana’s measure and reached that conclusion of the 8 miles. But as you say you have done a new study and this is very interesting. because with the 8 yojanas it was all too big. But I have a doubt, you say that in Bharata varsa it is the only place where yojana is reduced during the 4 yugas as the size of the human body is reduced. But if the measures change so much, then the great measures that are given in the Bhagavatam about the universe and the distance between planets, would it be changing? Sometimes the universe would be very large and sometimes very small according to the era. That confuses me. Or will it be that outside of Bharata, the measure would be 8 miles in other parts of the universe? I appreciate your answer prabhu.
This was the logical problem I faced, where was the other 98% of Bharata-varsa? Why is nothing stated about the “unknown” portion of Bharata in any of the 18 Puranas? Fortunately, I have already identified the size and location of Indradvipa-khanda and Kumarika-khanda from 3 separate Puranas, and I now find that no portion of Bharata-varsa is unknown. The “missing dvipas” problem comes from two separate speculations; the 8-mile yojana, and that these 9 islands/khandas are separated by the ocean. This is a translation problem only, as they are collectively surrounded by ocean. We now know the khandas are parts of Eurasia or Earth, and Bharata or Kumarika-khanda is represented by either India or Northern-central India depending on the Purana, which themselves actually depend upon the Kalpa in which they were composed.
Regarding your question, Bharata is the only varsa subject to Yuga changes. The land would not shrink, it would seem to get larger as Man shrinks. Therefore the rest of Jambudvipa/Bhumandala does not change. 8-miles is fine – but it may not be accurate either. The measurements given in several Puranas concerning the measurable distance from Kanyakumari to 1) Gangotri 2) Badrinath 3) Manasarovar Lake 4) Kashmir 5) Himalayas all calculate to roughly 1.5 miles per yojana. This is Puranic evidence. Regarding reasons why there might be a difference to 8 miles, I have identifies 7 plausible reasons from shastra. All this information will be published in my book “Puranic Geography of Bharata-varsa” and the affiliated webste bhumandala.com when finished.
